Does Your Home Based Business Have A WOW Factor?
Many people who run their own business often find difficulty in trying to actually market what
they do. For many, marketing is a bit of a mystery. Knowing where to start can be a
problem and then what to do next.
For the most part, they have the basics - a web site, Yellow Pages, brochures, leaflets, direct
mail, trade shows and seminars - the usual networking routine. But, is that all there is to
marketing? If it was, then we would all have people queuing up to buy our products!
Sometimes, these processes work, sometimes they don't - the key is consistency - having a
system that works consistently all the time. Find a system that works and then work the
system.
Before going any further I'd like to take a look at definitions of
"marketing".
"Marketing is the use of strategies to generate a constant supply of high-quality leads for
your service business".
This is a very simple and straightforward definition. But how can we apply it to the methods
we use already? The first question is to ask why your current activities are not producing
results. This brings us to the title of this article. What are you doing to create the "Wow"
factor in your marketing activities.
Take a good look at all your brochures, web site, Yellow pages Ads and put them all to the
"so what?" test. Read your sales material out loud. Then ask yourself if your audience
could be listening and saying:
"so what?"
"why do I care?"
"what's in it for me?"
Your ads must tell the audience exactly what is in it for them - you MUST provide a solution
for them with your headline ads and banners. If your advertising and sales copy does not
provide them with a solution to their problem, you may well get a "so what" response.
Address the audience
If you write only about you and the history of your company, the services you can provide
and your level of experience and qualifications, and how you love working together with
people... blah blah blah... guess what? You fail the "so what" test. You are giving nothing to
the audience that they are actually interested in - they want solutions to their problems in a
fixed time scale, preferably.
What you need to do is analyse all your sales material and start over again. Be sure that
your copy material has information that your customers are searching for!

These ideas may help
1 Challenge all your sales copy and marketing that do not consistently generate leads for
your business - even ones that worked before. Take a look to see how you can improve
your message and get a higher ROI - then put it to the "Wow" test (Wow - this is for me!)
2 Take a look at your sales letter or web site home page and write out an X each time you
see your name, company, "I" or "me", "my" etc. Then write an O (for ok) for each time it
mention's the customer name and the you/your words. Then make sure you have a higher
O score compared to the X's.
3 Find yourself a small network of friends who can become "critical friends" and ask for
honest feedback about your sales copy - does it push their "wow" button?
4 Do not be afraid of negative feedback - use it constructively and act on it.
5 When you get feedback, analyse and drill down - make sure you fully grasp what it is that
they are telling you - do not simply accept someone's opinion but get to what they feel
personally about the copy they have read.
6 Make sure your message is targeted to the audience you want to reach. Do not sell
apples to a bunch of banana lovers! Be clear about and in your message to be sure your
targeted audience feels their wow-button being pushed.
