#GivingTuesday Shines a Light on Philanthropy, Service and American Generosity and Creates Opening Day for the Giving Season

2,500+ Partners Harness Social Media to Get People Talking about Causes, Needs and Innovative Ways to Give Back. Blackbaud reports 53% increase in online donations on inaugural #GivingTuesday compared to same day last year.

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 28, 2012

An unprecedented partnership of more than 2,500 charities, volunteer organizations, corporations, community centers and foundations made history yesterday with the inaugural #GivingTuesday, marked by activities and campaigns in all 50 U.S. states. The #GivingTuesday movement created a new day on the calendar to mark the opening of the Giving Season, with volunteer projects, online fundraisers, and collections for the needy with many focusing on Superstorm Sandy victims. The movement's goals of inviting more people to think about giving and encouraging generosity of time and resources were embraced by grassroots organizers, corporate and retail leaders and an emerging cadre of entrepreneurial philanthropists. The #GivingTuesday message was also echoed in statements from Mayors of Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and New York, philanthropy leaders including Bill Gates, and the White House. Early indicators point to the promise and potential of the movement. Blackbaud (http://www.blackbaud.com), a global provider of software and services to nonprofits and a founding partner of #GivingTuesday, processed $10 million in online donations on inaugural #GivingTuesday ? a 53% increase when compared to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving the previous year.

Organizers hope this outpouring of giving and awareness will catalyze a sustained period of robust and creative giving during the holiday season.

An "Opening Day" for Giving

Coming on the heels of the country's biggest shopping days, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday was designed to help change the national dialogue about giving and mobilize an "opening day" for charitable giving and volunteer support for causes large and small. Born from conversations at New York City's 92nd Street Y, and supported by a Team of Influencers including some of the nation's leading foundation executives, philanthropy experts, public relations professionals and social media leaders, #GivingTuesday asked people to support their favorite charities and do something special to give back on November 27. Next year, #GivingTuesday will fall on December 3, 2013.

Social Media Helps Power a Movement about Generosity

The #GivingTuesday conversation reached millions of people on November 27 through a coordinated social media effort that included a Social Media Ambassadors program; special blog series; innovative platforms designed to help participants share information, tools and best practices; and a sustained Twitter and Facebook conversation. The social media conversation included thousands of posts and photos showcasing the variety of ways that people donated or gave back on November 27 and the plans they have to support causes throughout the holiday season.

The robust conversation resulted in #GivingTuesday becoming a trending topic on Twitter in the United States for much of the day on November 27 and intermittently trending as a global topic, as well. In addition, media outlets reaching all 50 U.S. states covered both local and national initiatives, fueling discussions about how organizations can make giving more accessible and relevant for future generations and emerging leaders.

Increased Support Points to a Promising Start to the "Giving Season"

In addition to the nationwide surge in conversations about giving, #GivingTuesday partners reported strong response to calls for increased support, volunteer efforts and matching grants. Many organizations have already started reporting the impact of their efforts on #GivingTuesday to their supporters and donors, encouraging them to maintain this momentum throughout the holiday season. From supplies to volunteer hours to pints of blood donated, or even miles walked or jogged for charity, the #GivingTuesday community asked people to help "Get out the Give" in thousands of ways that will have lasting impact.

About #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday is a movement to celebrate giving, invite more people to think about meaningful ways to give their time and talents, and provide incentives to give. This first-of-its-kind effort, starting with the November 27, 2012 kick-off day for the giving season, harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners?charities, families, businesses and individuals?to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

#GivingTuesday calls on inspiring, entrepreneurial people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, to give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they celebrate and to help create a better world. #GivingTuesday is harnessing the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays that is dedicated to giving, similar to the way Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days synonymous with holiday shopping.

A team of recognized experts and influencers, initially convened by leaders of 92nd Street Y and supported by a core group of founding partners, are spearheading this effort. Founding partners include the United Nations Foundation, Case Foundation, DonorsChoose.org, Mashable, Blackbaud, charity: water, GlobalGiving, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Kiva, Darden Restaurant Group, Groupon, Unilever and VentureThree Capital. Leaders in philanthropy, social media, innovative giving, grassroots organizing, marketing and communications are providing counsel and resources to help build this movement.

(AP) ? Benicio Del Toro didn't wait long to collect on a favor that Oliver Stone owed him for working extra hours on the set of his most recent movie, "Savages," released this year.

The favor? A trip to Del Toro's native Puerto Rico, which Stone hadn't visited since the early 1960s.

"I told him, you owe me one," Del Toro said with a smile as he recalled the conversation during a press conference Friday in the U.S. territory, where he and Stone are helping raise money for one of the island's largest art museums.

Del Toro, wearing jeans, a black jacket and a black T-shirt emblazoned with the name of local reggaeton singer Tego Calderon, waved to the press as he was introduced.

"Hello, greetings. Is this a press conference?" he quipped as he and Stone awaited questions.

Both men praised each other's work, saying they would like to work with each other again.

"I deeply admire him as an actor, the way he thinks, the way he expresses himself," Stone said. "Of all the actors I've worked with, he's the most interesting."

Stone said Del Toro always delivers surprises while acting, even when it's as something as subtle as certain gestures between dialogue.

"I think Benicio is the master of keeping you watching," he said.

Stone said he enjoys meeting up with Del Toro off-set because he's one of the few actors in Hollywood who can talk about something other than movies.

"He is very interested in the world around him," Stone said, adding that the conversations sometimes center around politics and other topics.

Del Toro declined to answer when asked what he thought about Puerto Rico's referendum earlier this month, which aimed to determine the future of the island's political status. He said the results did not seem to point to a clear-cut outcome.

Del Toro then said he would like the island's movie business to grow, especially in a way that would encourage learning.

"I'm talking about movies in an educational sense, as a way to discover other parts of the world," he said. "Create a film class. You'll see; kids won't skip it."

Del Toro also shared his thoughts on being a father after having a daughter with Kimberly Stewart in August 2011.

He said the girl is learning how to swim and is discovering the world around her.

"She has her own personality," Del Toro said. "She's not her mother. She's not me."

Both Del Toro and Stone are expected to remain in Puerto Rico through the weekend to raise money for the Art Museum of Puerto Rico, which is hosting its annual movie festival and will honor Stone's movies.

Museum curator Juan Carlos Lopez Quintero said the money raised will be used to enhance the museum's permanent collection, especially with Puerto Rican paintings from the 19th century and early 20th century.

During the election, President Barack?Obama crashed servers when he appeared in an impromptu "Ask Me Anything" post on Reddit.?Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican from California,?decided to do the same ? "Together, we can make Washington take a break from messing w/ the Internet" his post said in part. But?the response wasn't quite as positive as he might have hoped.

Issa's post, seeking?discussion of a two-year ban on legislation that would affect the Internet, was submitted to?the popular social news site?Tuesday evening. Shortly afterwards, it reached the front page and questions started rolling in. By Wednesday morning,?the time Issa had set for answering questions, the queries?had turned into something of a dogpile.

By far the most popular question the one?posed by user The_Milkman: "Hey Darrell, why did you vote for CISPA?"?Indeed, Issa's sponsorship of CISPA???the controversial?Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act that was approved by the House, but has yet to be approved or vetoed by the president ????was the topic of many questions and much ire.

Issa's?attachment to the controversial piece of legislation?? which would expand?government agencies' ability to access data from sites like Facebook and Twitter???seemed to poison his attempt to solicit Reddit's help?from the start.

Regardless of the unfriendly atmosphere, Issa answered dozens of questions, including some openly hostile ones (his post record can be found here). And like the president, he included a picture of himself answering questions for authenticity's sake. Both the grilling Issa received and his responses could easily be considered more thorough than the president's, who answered questions some?commentators?characterized as softballs.

But regardless of the tone of the conversation, the goal of procuring constructive input on the proposed legislation (the "Internet American Moratorium Act" or IAMA)?seems to have been achieved. A number of comments and suggested changes have been submitted at the site set up for this purpose, and various issues have been raised in the comment threads that may help improve the bill. And the high positive vote count on the AMA itself indicates that the community is at least interested in discussing the topic.

There's a lesson to be learned for politicians and other?public figures who are considering this kind of open discussion on a site like Reddit: It's not always going to be a love-in, as it was with the president. You may end up like Issa, with a front-page post and 2,500 comments calling you everything from an opportunistic hypocrite to a crony of big business.

Day of reckoning for Cameron and British press

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron faces a no-win dilemma on Thursday when a far-reaching inquiry into British newspapers delivers its verdict on how to curb the excesses of the country's notoriously aggressive press.

Cameron, who was embarrassed when toe-curling details of his cosy texts to one of media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's lieutenants emerged at the inquiry, will have to decide whether to accept its findings and anger a hostile press and many in his own party, or reject them and risk dividing his coalition government.

He will also be conscious of the weight of expectation from a public that was scandalized to learn that journalists hacked the phones of victims of crime, wined, dined and paid police for leads and were in constant touch with senior politicians.

Cameron will give his response to the House of Commons after the report is published at 1330 GMT, under scrutiny from high-profile figures such as Hollywood actor Hugh Grant who have campaigned for a clampdown on an industry they say ruins lives.

The issue has divided the cabinet and could put the prime minister at odds with Nick Clegg, the leader of the junior Liberal Democrat partners in the coalition government.

Following talks between the leaders on Thursday, a Liberal Democrat source said Clegg would deliver his own statement to parliament after Cameron, implying that the two disagree on the way forward. However the source played down suggestions of a major breach in the coalition.

The inquiry was ordered by Cameron following public outrage at Murdoch's now defunct News of the World, a News Corp tabloid whose journalists hacked the phone messages of missing schoolgirl Milly Dowler, who was later found dead.

Exposing the close ties between political leaders, police chiefs and press barons, the inquiry revealed the "dark arts" of journalists seeking ever more salacious stories in a bid to hold up dwindling circulation figures.

Huge attention will be focused on whether Lord Justice Brian Leveson, one of Britain's top judges, recommends a new body to regulate the press with powers enshrined in law, or merely says the existing system of self-regulation should be overhauled.

He could also criticize Cameron's government, including one of his most senior ministers, Jeremy Hunt, for close ties to Murdoch's News Corp and their handling of the company's aborted bid to take control of pay-TV group BSkyB in what would have been its largest acquisition.

The press, backed by some 80 members of parliament, has lobbied hard for Cameron to resist calls for legislation, arguing it would curb freedom of speech and mean newspapers requiring state approval for the first time since 1695.

"For today Britain stands at a crossroads," Murdoch's Sun tabloid said in its leader column. "In one direction: Official control of papers, with state sensors approving stories. In the other direction: A free press under stricter self-governance."

UNACCEPTABLE PRACTICES

However, a similar number of lawmakers, as well as academics and celebrities, favor statutory regulation, and opinion polls suggest the public agrees.

A poll for the BBC said two thirds of people do not trust newspapers to tell the truth, while almost half want the industry to be regulated by a body backed by the courts.

"The status quo is unacceptable and needs to change," Cameron told parliament on Wednesday. "This government set up Leveson because of unacceptable practices in parts of the media and because of a failed regulatory system."

Some media have speculated that Cameron will give the press one last chance to get its house in order even if Leveson backs a new law.

Under the watchful eye of Leveson, celebrities including Harry Potter author JK Rowling, singer Charlotte Church, Dowler's parents and other Britons who found themselves in the media spotlight, told the inquiry how they had been harassed, bullied, and traumatized by the press.

Four prime ministers including Cameron were also quizzed in great detail about their links to newspaper owners, especially Murdoch, who himself endured two days of grilling, during which he denied playing puppet-master to those running the country.

The inquiry heard intimate emails and text messages between Cameron and Murdoch's top lieutenant Rebekah Brooks, who goes on trial next year over the alleged phone hacking.

Van Gogh, John Lennon letters coming to NY auction

NEW YORK (AP) ? An upcoming auction of over 300 historical documents includes rare letters written by Vincent van Gogh, George Washington, John Lennon and other iconic figures.

The property of an anonymous American collector is being offered by Profiles in History in an online and phone auction on Dec. 18.

Among the highlights is a two-page letter from Washington to an Anglican clergyman.

Another top item is a signed van Gogh letter, written in 1890, to Joseph and Marie Ginoux, who were proprietors of the Cafe de la Gare in Arles, France, where the Dutch post-impressionist artist lived for a time.

Each of those letters is estimated to bring $200,000 to $300,000.

A handwritten letter from John Lennon to Eric Clapton has a pre-sale estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.

The collection will be exhibited Dec. 3-9 at Douglas Elliman's Madison Avenue art gallery.

Washington's letter was written on Aug. 15, 1798, to the Rev. Jonathan Boucher, amid an undeclared naval war with France. Washington thanks Boucher for sending him his "View of the Causes and Consequences of the American Revolution," a book of 13 discourses Boucher preached.

"Peace, with all the world is my sincere wish, I am sure it is our true policy ? and am persuaded it is the ardent desire of the Government," the former president and Founding Father wrote.

In a Jan. 20, 1890, four-page letter, handwritten in French to his friends Monsieur and Madame Ginoux, van Gogh wishes the ailing proprietress a speedy recovery.

"Illnesses are there to make us remember again that we are not made of wood," the artist wrote. "That's what seems the good side of all this to me. Then afterwards one goes back to one's everyday work less fearful of the annoyances, with a new store of serenity." Van Gogh died less than seven months later.

He suffered from acute anxiety and bouts of depression throughout his life. Madame Ginoux and the cafe were frequent subjects of his work.

The eight-page letter from Lennon is a draft he wrote to Clapton on Sept. 29, 1971, and signed "John and Yoko." The whereabouts of the final version is unknown.

Lennon writes candidly about his admiration for the great British guitarist and suggests forming a "'nucleus' group (Plastic Ono Band) . ? and of course had YOU!!! In mind as soon as we decided." He writes that drummer Jim Kelnter, artist Klaus Voormann, pianist Nicky Hopkins and producer Phil Spector "all agreed so far" to join.

"Anyway, the point is, after missing the Bangla-Desh concert, we began to feel more and more like going on the road, but not the way I used with the Beatles ? night after night of torture. We mean to enjoy ourselves, take it easy, and maybe even see some of the places we go to! We have many 'revolutionary' ideas for presenting shows that completely involve the audience ."

Other luminaries whose papers will be sold include Lou Gehrig, Louis Pasteur, Sigmund Freud, Charles Darwin, Marie Curie, Giuseppe Verdi, Peter Tchaikovsky, Cole Porter, King Henry II and Napoleon I.

The December auction is the first of several sales that will be held over two years. The entire collection contains 3,000 items.

Sutter agrees to donate Warrack Hospital campus to youth services ...

SANTA ROSA ? Social Advocates for Youth announced that Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa has offered the Warrack Hospital campus as a donation, a development that would allow the nonprofit to increase its capacity nearly five-fold while adding a number of new services.

Should the the nonprofit ? better known as SAY ? finalize critical details of the proposal, it would then begin to raise funds from grants, government sources and community donations to establish a ?Youth Opportunity Center.? It would aim to provide youth in Sonoma County with a host of services ranging from counseling, employment and job skills training, transitional housing for former foster children, emergency shelter and other community programs.

It?s too soon to say exactly how much money will need to be raised, pending the completion cost estimates for renovations by Santa Rosa-based Wright Contracting, said Matt Martin, executive director of SAY. Additionally, the nonprofit is currently evaluating any potential increase to its operating budget, which in 2011 was $3.2 million, to support new programs.

?We are honored (Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa) wants to support SAY?s efforts to reach more of Sonoma County?s youth and children in crisis with our services and programs,? Mr. Martin said in announcing the planned donation, adding that it ?would be a great start in bringing our dream of establishing a center where, for generations to come, teens and vulnerable 18-24 year-old ( can heal, grow, and find hope into reality.?

The Warrack campus opened in 1960 as a 69-bed acute-care facility. Sutter Health acquired the hospital, located at Hoen Avenue and Summerfield Road, back in 2001 but de-licensed it in 2006, ending acute care operations ?due to lack of community need.?

The campus since then has been used for a number of other services, including its workforce health offices and certain labs, but Sutter has long been looking for a better fit for the building. Only 25 percent of the campus was occupied.

?We learned of SAY?s vision to create a Sonoma County Youth Opportunity Center and knew this was the right fit and best use for the building?s unique configuration,? Mike Purvis, chief administration officer of Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa, said in a statement.? ?(Sutter) offered to donate the building to SAY to preserve the location?s community service legacy.?

If the plans go forward, SAY would relocate from its existing 11,000-square-foot offices on Airway Drive in Santa Rosa to the Warrack Campus, where it would occupy roughly 52,000 square feet. Two programs run by SAY, the Dr. James E. Coffee House Teen Shelter and Tomayo Village, would remain in their current locations. The nonprofit anticipates completing its investigation of the building in early 2013.? Upon successful completion of that inspection, Sutter intends on remaining and would the east wing of the hospital back from SAY.

The nonprofit would also likely boost staffing levels, but an immediate number is not yet known, Mr. Martin said.?

In August, SAY?s Board of Directors? entered into a 180-day due diligence period with Sutter to investigate the condition of the building and identify all costs associated with remodeling the interior.

?SAY is evaluating our capacity to operate current programs while expanding into the Warrack Campus with the Youth Opportunity Center and including other nonprofits that provide complimentary services to children and youth,? said John Meislahn, SAY board president. SAY anticipates completing its investigation of the building in early 2013.

According to SAY, several local Sonoma County building industry leaders have donated their time to assist SAY in evaluating the facility, including Mark Davis of Wright Contracting, Jim Henderson Architect, Project Development Manager Bert Bangsberg, Don Watanabe, former Burbank Housing Project Manager, Steve Worthen of Interiors Inc., Civil Engineer Leroy Carlenzoli, and Zyromski-Konicek.

SAY was founded in 1971 and provides a variety of services including low-cost counseling, job training, educational support, emergency services, transitional housing and youth employment to former foster children and children age 5-24 and their families. It has 54 full-time employees and about 250 volunteers. About 78 percent of its operating budget comes from grants and another 18 percent from donations.

The Youth Opportunity Center could have significant impact on those in crisis, should the plans come to fruition, officials said.

?If we can come together, raise the funds needed and make this dream of a Youth Oppurtunity Center happen, we will change the future for hundreds of Sonoma County youth every year,? said Bill Friedman, SAY honorary board member.

WATCH: Rand Paul: GOP in danger of 'becoming a dinousaur'

President Barack Obama has proposed raising taxes on the rich to put America's fiscal house in order, but critics say federal spending is so massive that the wealthy don't have enough money to cover the nation's unprecedented debt.

In an?interview?with MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell, Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) said President Barack Obama's plan to raise taxes on the wealthy would only generate enough revenue to fund the federal government for eight days.

"The president?s plan to increase taxes on the upper two percent covers the spending by this federal government not for eight years, not for eight months, not for eight weeks but for eight days. Eight days only," said Mr. Price. "It?s not a real solution. So, again, I?m puzzled by an administration that seems to be more interested in raising tax rates than in gaining economic vitality."

The problem is that the rich don't have enough money to put so much as a dent in America's $16 trillion national debt. "If the IRS grabbed 100 percent of income over $1 million, the take would be just $616 billion,"?writes?John?Stossel. "That?s only a third of this year?s deficit. Our national debt would continue to explode."

iOS takes top marketshare spot from Android on iPhone 5 enthusiasm

iOS takes top marketshare spot from Android on iPhone 5 enthusiasm

iOS on phones (i.e., the iPhone) has reportedly overtaken Android on phones (i.e. dozens and dozens of different phones) in marketshare, accounting for 48.1% of US smartphone sales, ahead of Android?s 46.7%. This follows the release of the iPhone 5, and not coincidentally, the last time Apple saw this share of the market was after last year?s iPhone 4S launch. The numbers come by way of study conducted by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. Kantar?s global consumer insight director, Dominic Sunnebo, expects Apple to beat its previous record of 49.3% of US marketshare.

Sunnebo comments: ?Apple has always managed to maintain loyalty levels far above the competition, and this has clearly played a part in driving sales of its new device. An impressive 92% of existing Apple owners in the US said they will choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade.?

Kantar?s study also notes that a large portion of iPhone 5 sales are new iPhone users. While a significant majority, 62%, are existing iPhone users upgrading their devices, 38% of iPhone 5 customers are either buying their first smartphone or switching from another platform, with 13% of new customers switching from an Android device and 6% switching from BlackBerry. Additionally, 92% of existing iPhone users said they plan to choose an iPhone the next time they upgrade their phone.

These numbers are good news for Apple. To have that sort of customer satisfaction is the wish of any company. It also goes to show that despite what some may say, excitement for the iPhone is as palpable as it?s ever been. With almost 20% of new customers coming from other devices, the iPhone remains an attractive device for a wide range of people. Or maybe they just like boring things.

iPhone 5 Release Date and Delivery: Apple Smartphone Sales Out-Do Android to Top Spot in U.S.

After Apple's big launch of the iPhone 5 in September, reports in November suggest that the sales of the latest iphone has put the Cupertino company back on the top spot in smartphone sales in the U.S. market, out beating Android.

According to Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, a smartphone sales data provider, Apple currently has 48.1% share of US smartphone sales, while Android has 46.7%. ?

Dominic Sunnebo of Kantar Worldpanel ComTech told Patently Apple, "The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the US was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods. This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3% and achieve its highest ever share of the US smartphone market within the next two periods."

Like Us on Facebook

Meanwhile, Cult of Mac reports that iPhone 5 delivery is likely to take place sometime in early December. The delays were caused by production problems. According to the two Chinese companies that manufacture the product, Foxconn and Hon Hai Precision Industry, the enormous demand for the iPhone 5 is increasing pressure on the production. However, whether the high demand is the cause for the production delay is uncertain.

Hon Hai Precision Industry and Foxconn chairman Terry Gou told PC Mag, " Market demand is very strong, but we just can't really fulfill Apple's requests."

On Saturday, CNET reported that wireless providers indicated that the "ship-by-date" for the latest iPhone was listed as one week away, but the Apple website shows that production could take up to three or four weeks more.

BTIG Analyst Walter Piecyk told CNET, "Apple might be trying to induce their customers to reserve a phone for next day pick up at one of their retail stores in the hopes of capturing additional sales...The reservation policy is the same for the iPad mini, but we have been able to find iPad mini inventory increasingly available in the handful of stores that we called."

A new report by a Chinese company, Hon Hai Percision Inc., which assembles Apple's iPhone 5 says that the delay is due to its new avatar.

The company released a statement to the Wall Street Journal as follows, "to make it light and thin, the design is very complicated," said?an?official at the company who declined to be named. "It takes time to learn how to make this new device. Practice makes perfect. Our productivity has been improving day by day."

According to CNET,?this shortage of iPhone units is due to the phone's new display technology.

Apple depends on two companies- Sharp and LG Display, to produce its display screens. The latest display combines in-cell touch sensing technology, whereas the display of the 4S had a separate touch-screen and separate display screen. The two companies say the new technology of the iPhone 5 display has posed challenges for a speedy production. In addition, the new display costs seven dollars more than that of its predecessors. The new display costs the company $44 per piece, while the 4S cost $34.

According to the Apple website, customers could be waiting up to a month to get the latest iPhone. The website says there is a three to four delay in shipment.

On the other front, a Wall Street Journal article, accessible only through subscription, said Apple has already started manufacturing the mini-tablet, which is rumored to be released later this month or early next month.

According to ComputerAndVideoGames.com, "Apple Inc.'s Asian component suppliers have started mass production of a new tablet computer smaller than the current iPad, people with knowledge of the situation said, as the Silicon Valley company tries to stay competitive against rivals such as Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.that are offering smaller, less-expensive alternatives to the iPad."

A report from CNN Money suggested that Apple is likely to send event-invitation to its highly anticipated iPad Mini by October 23.

Philip Elmer-DeWitt for CNN Money doesn't stop at giving the launch a specific date, but also puts a specific date when the iPad Mini hits the shelves, which according to the article is on November 2.

It comes as no surprise that Apple refused to comment.?

Chevy launches iPhone Siri support for Spark, Sonic vehicles, aims to keep your Eyes Free

DNP Chevrolet Spark

If you're looking at getting a 2013 Chevrolet Spark or Sonic LTZ / RS, you'll be able to drag Siri along for the ride, provided that you have an iPhone 4S or later running iOS 6, according to GM. It'll pair with Chevy's MyLink entertainment system using Bluetooth, ensuring you avoid distractions via Apple's new Eyes Free mode that lets you disable the smartphone's screen via a steering wheel button. Using voice-activated commands, you'll be able to prompt the system to make hands-free calls, play songs from your iTunes library, listen to and compose text messages and access calendar appointments. If you ask a question that requires a web page to be displayed, however, Siri will decline to answer -- ensuring your eyes stay where they should.

The automaker also announced an upcoming version of MyLink for the Chevrolet Impala that will let buyers "skin" the instrument panel with four different themes: Edge and Velocity for the younger set, and Contemporary or Main Street aimed at "busy moms" or business types. It'll also have an optional 8-inch touchscreen and let you link up to ten devices via Blutetooth or USB. Check the sources for info on all the new vehicles or the video after the break.

UK regulator fines UBS in rogue trader case

(AP) ? Britain's financial regulator has fined Swiss bank UBS AG for failings which allowed a rogue trader to lose $2.3 billion.

The Financial Services Authority says Monday that it is fining the bank 29.7 million pounds ($47.6 million).

Former UBS trader Kweku Adoboli was sentenced to seven years in prison last week after being convicted of two counts of fraud.

The regulator says the case revealed serious weaknesses in the firm's procedures, management systems and internal controls.

Survey: Young people cheating less these days

By Vignesh Ramachandran

Cheating, lying and stealing among American students?are all less prevalent nowadays, according to a new report.

The 2012 "Report Card on the Ethics of American Youth" suggests that young people's morals have improved in recent years. The survey, conducted every two years by the?Los Angeles-based Josephson Institute of Ethics, found that 99 percent of the 23,000 high school students sampled say they believe "it is very important to have good moral character."

The results found 51 percent of students in 2012 admitted they cheated on an exam in the past year, which is down from 59 percent in 2010. The percentage of students admitting they've copied another's homework dropped by two points in the past couple years.

"Changes in children?s behavior of this magnitude suggest a major shift in parenting and school involvement in issues of honesty and character," Michael Josephson, founder and president of the Josephson Institute of Ethics, said in a statement. "Though there is still far too much cheating, lying and stealing, I think we have turned the corner."

Related: Feds say teachers hired stand-in to take their certification tests

The survey also suggest there are fewer Pinocchios:?Fifty-five percent of students in 2012 say they've lied to a teacher in the past year about something significant, compared with 61 percent in 2010.

Students admitting they stole something from a store in the past year fell seven percentage points in the last two years, to 20 percent in 2012.

Through hidden cameras, a few parents find out if their kids are among the 85 percent of high school students who admit to getting a little extra help. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

While Josephson believes the results are "a small ray of sunshine shining through lots of dark clouds,"?this report comes in the midst of a number of recent cheating scandals among students a little bit older.

At least 78 Air Force Academy cadets have been accused of cheating on an online calculus test by?allegedly?getting help during the exam from a website.

Even the Ivy League has not been immune to moral lapses. It was recently reported that?dozens of students at Harvard University were being investigated for?possibly?sharing answers or plagiarizing on a final exam.

A lot of young people cheat because they're under pressure to get ahead and succeed, according to David Callahan, senior fellow at New York City-based public policy center Demos.

"Students are worried about getting left behind in this economy," said Callahan, who's also author of "The Cheating Culture: Why More Americans Are Doing Wrong to Do Well."

In fact, 45 percent of the boys and 28 percent of the girls in the Josephson survey believe that "a person has to lie and cheat at least occasionally in order to succeed."

"It?s still a big problem," Callahan told NBC News. "There?s been a decline, but it?s not a huge decline."

Top New York City public school Stuyvesant High is investigating accusations that up to 70 students may have used cellphones to cheat on a major exam. ?NBC's chief education correspondent Rehema Ellis reports.

Sustainability a Key Factor for Consumers, Survey Finds ...

Two thirds of consumers in six countries recognize the need to consume less and purchase products that are good for the environment and society, according to an online survey.

The Regeneration Consumer Study, a joint project by GlobeScan and SustainAbility with support from BBMG, surveyed 6,224 consumers across Brazil, China, India, Germany, the UK and the US.

The study is part of The Regeneration Roadmap, an initiative designed to advance sustainable development in the private sector. A full report on the survey, which was conducted in September and October 2012, will be released Tuesday.

Consumers in developing markets such as Brazil, China and India are particularly inclined towards sustainable consumption, according to the survey. For example, 51 percent of consumers in developing markets report purchasing products because of environmental and social benefits, compared to just 22 percent of their counterparts in developed nations, such as Germany, the UK and the US.

Consumers in developing countries also are more than twice as willing to pay more for sustainable products (60 percent compared to 26 percent), the survey said. Consumers in Brazil, China and India also were more likely to influence their peers with 70 percent saying they encourage others to buy from companies that are socially and environmentally responsible, compared to 34 percent in developed countries.

Two-thirds of consumers globally (67 percent) said they are interested in sharing their ideas, opinions and experiences with companies to help them develop better products or create new solutions, according to the survey.

Still, significant barriers to sustainable purchasing stand in the way for consumers across all markets, including perceptions of product performance, high prices, skepticism about product claims and a lack of knowledge about what makes a product socially or environmentally responsible, the survey said.

Research released in October by Cone Communications also found consumers had a lack of understanding about sustainable products.

The survey found that while consumers have a strong belief in corporate social responsibility, 63 percent admit to not knowing where to find such information and 55 percent say they don?t understand the impact they?re having when buying a product from a company that says it?s socially responsible.

Should agents give appraisers the first page of each contract ...

I?ve been hearing from a few real estate agents that their brokers are telling them to give appraisers the first page of each contract to help show support for the market?s acceptance of a certain price level. Is this a good idea? Here?s my take.

real estate contracts - Sacramento Appraisal Blog

I think it?s great when Realtors share data about a listing. It?s helpful for appraisers to sift through first-hand information to shape an understanding of how the market perceived the subject property. It?s definitely a plus to see contracts instead of just hearing ?there were multiple offers?. However, here are a few points to consider:

  1. What about the other pages? The first page is a very limited portion of a contract. There could always be an addendum or a requested credit or concession on another page of the contact that effectively reduces the contract price.
  2. A focus on sales and market knowledge: It?s a nice touch to get the first page of a contract, but?I?d rather have?Realtors offer data in the form of recent sales,?listings AND any insight?into how buyers perceive the market. What are buyers willing to pay more for in the neighborhood? Is there something premium about the subject street? What facets of the neighborhood market?impact price? What sales did you use to support your list price?
  3. Supplementary data:?Keep in mind?appraisers use sales and listings in an appraisal report to support value ? not the number of offers (even though that can be supplementary data). I?ve had agents bring me nothing but?the front page of multiple offers,?which is nice, but?the number of offers and level of offers is secondary to more primary data like sales and listings.
  4. Contract price?does not equal value: Inventory has been so low in the Sacramento market that?some buyers are?offering far above a reasonable value.?This means offers?might not always reflect value. There are?several reasons why buyers are willing to overpay for properties right now,?which is something appraisers are?watching closely.

Summary:?In short, I?d love to get the first page of?each contract?from agents (and have?the agent let me know about any concessions, credits or addendums?that might impact the price level on the first page). Ultimately though, if?a Realtor wishes to communicate more thoroughly about a property, I?d prefer to hear about more ?meaty? market items like recent sales, listings and insider-knowledge?of the neighborhood.

Aftermarket Truck Accessories-Don' t tolerated it, change it

Truck owners are always on the lookout for low-cost discount pick up accessories. There are great deals of websites on the web that claim to be offering pickup accessories for wholesale rates. When a person digs into the website they locate that this is not the situation at all. Personally I would not also see a website that is making these claims. Maybe their costs are respectable however if they are lying to you in the description or ad, they me be capable of other devious actions throughout your purchasing experience.

Stick with a company you can easily trust. They might be marketing sale costs or rebate prices however they are not really out to trick you. I such as a business which are straight up with me when I am looking for truck accessories or anything else for that matter. I got no time for bull, unless it's bully pick up accessories. I enjoy them LOL. However with all significance, I just dislike when some of these merchants are attempting to deceive me into buying something. The better they treat me and I trust them, the much better possibility I will certainly go back to make yet another purchase. Would not you agree?

There are a lot of custom pickup accessories you can easily get at genuine good prices online. They have every thing from diesel pick up accessories to work truck accessories and every thing between. You could alter a great deal of the original equipment on your truck with an assortment of aftermarket truck accessories.

I think you must try to choose your accessories without getting too cheesy. You truly ought to attempt to keep it sophisticated to make a genuine impression. You are exactly what you drive you understand. There is over flashing it. You can easily add some real good accessories and include some things that are needed, such as a tonneau cover, good mud flaps. Things like custom billet grills are not needed however they can easily add a touch of class and make your truck a little different than the man who has the exact same style as you down the street from where you live.

There are a lot more trucks on the road today than ever before. I think the explanation for this is because they are made today with so much privilege and comfort. Many of them have the prolonged cabs which will enable even more passenger seating. Many of the pickup truck have a short box because of the extended cabs. This can create a problem when hauling cargo but there are solutions to this with truck accessories such as a bed extender. With an extender such as Amp Research offers, you simply open the tailgate and the extender flips over to offer you with an added 2 feet of bed area. It exercises well for transporting items such as a motorbike. When the tailgate is up it is flipped into the box giving you a cargo containment system.

There are uncounted accessories offered that make a pickup truck owners life much simpler, such as the Amp Research power step. This product immediately deploys and retracts when you open and close the door. It provides you with a good flat action 10 -12 inches down so you do not need to stretch to reach the ground. I think this item is very and could resolve the trouble for a ton of individuals who have a issue getting in and from their truck for one reason or the other. For the rest of us, it is just extremely beneficial.

There are many items easily offered to resolve lots of problems people face. You can now get brighter headlights, better wiper blades, backup cameras, back-up beepers. There are simply a lot of to point out here. However do not simply place up with something when there is an effortless fix to it, alter it. Whatever your preference is, there are great deals of selections when it pertains to aftermarket truck accessories.

Metamaterials manipulate light on a microchip

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? Using a combination of the new tools of metamaterials and transformation optics, engineers at Penn State University have developed designs for miniaturized optical devices that can be used in chip-based optical integrated circuits, the equivalent of the integrated electronic circuits that make possible computers and cell phones.

Controlling light on a microchip could, in the short term, improve optical communications and allow sensing of any substance that interacts with electromagnetic waves. In the medium term, optical integrated circuits for infrared imaging systems are feasible. Further down the road lies high-speed all-optical computing. The path forward requires some twists on well-known equations, and the construction of structures smaller than the wavelength of light.

Light bends naturally as it crosses from one material to another, a phenomenon called refraction that can be seen in the way a stick seems to bend in water. Illusions, such as mirages in the desert or the shimmer of water on the road ahead on a hot day, are caused by a difference in the refractive index of layers of warmer and cooler air. The new field of transformation optics (TO) uses this light-bending phenomenon in a rigorously mathematical way by applying the 150-year-old Maxwell equations describing the propagation of light onto structures known as metamaterials, artificial constructs with custom-designed refractive indexes. The most famous applications of metamaterials are cloaking devices and perfect lenses, but those are just the tip of the optical iceberg.

In a paper in a new online journal, Light: Science and Applications, published by Nature Publishing Group, Douglas Werner, professor of electrical engineering, and his post-doc Qi Wu and Ph.D. student Jeremiah Turpin present a unified theory for designing practical devices on a single platform using transformation optics. "This field (transformation optics) is in its early stages, so there are many contributions to be made," Werner says. "Our big contribution is in figuring out how to develop TO designs with the simplest material parameters without impacting performance, and linking the devices together to form an on-chip integrated photonic system."

Among their designs are light collimators, which take light from a source and focus it into one or more tightly focused beams, waveguide couplers, which connect different sized waveguides, TO splitters, which divide power from an input waveguide to two or more output waveguides, waveguide crossings, which routes light in compact spaces without loss or crosstalk, and TO benders, which turn the light around corners without loss. These devices are only five to ten microns in size, and therefore many of them could fit on a centimeter-sized chip.

"It has been a joint effort to develop these transformation optics tools and designs," Werner says. "Jeremy wrote the algorithms behind the simulation tools. Qi is developing the designs to be simulated. In order to get the best design for a targeted application, thousands of simulations may have to be performed using powerful optimization techniques developed in our group."

Transformation optics devices that perform diverse, simple functions can be integrated together to build complex photonic systems for optical communications, imaging, computing, and sensing, say the authors. The current, non-TO approach is to design each device using different methods and materials that may not be compatible on a single platform. The Werner group's technique, on the other hand, employs graded index metamaterial structures, such as patterned air holes or rods, on a silicon-on-insulator platform that can be easily integrated into on-chip photonic systems, providing broad bandwidth and low losses.

In order to keep their designs grounded in reality, the group works closely with nanofabricators at Penn State's Nanofabrication Laboratory who are themselves developing new approaches to implement the Werner group's designs. All of the designs described in the paper can be realistically built with current fab processes, says Werner. "It's like a CAD tool," he explains, citing the computer-aided design tools used in manufacturing. "We've developed customized transformation optics simulation and optimization tools for designing optical devices. Beyond that," he continues, "TO is flexible enough that it opens up the possibility of creating all sorts of new devices that don't currently exist."

Partial support for this work was provided by the NSF MRSEC.

No. 1 Notre Dame beats USC 22-13, earns title shot

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Fighting Irish punched their ticket to Miami.

Theo Riddick rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown, Kyle Brindza kicked five field goals, and No. 1 Notre Dame secured a spot in the BCS championship game with a 22-13 victory over Southern California on Saturday night.

Everett Golson passed for 217 yards as the Irish (12-0) completed their first perfect regular season since 1988, earning a trip to south Florida on Jan. 7 to play for the storied program's first national title in 24 years.

Although they did little with flash on an electric night at the Coliseum, the Irish woke up more echoes of past Notre Dame greats with a grinding effort in this dynamic intersectional rivalry with USC (7-5), which has lost four of five.

Notre Dame's hard-nosed defense appropriately made the decisive stand in the final minutes, keeping USC out of the end zone on four plays from the Irish 1 with 2:33 to play.

"Well, that's who we are," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. "It's been our defense all year. Our offense is able to manage enough points."

After spending more than a decade looking up at the Trojans, the Irish are back on top of this rivalry with two straight wins in Los Angeles. The school of Knute Rockne, the Four Horsemen and Paul Hornung has new heroes now, from inspirational linebacker Manti Te'o to Kelly, who took the Irish from unranked to start the season to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time in 19 years.

Te'o, the Heisman Trophy hopeful, had a key interception against USC and became the second Irish defender with three 100-tackle seasons ? and he took particular pride in that last defensive stand, which included three straight Trojans runs resulting in nothing.

"It doesn't matter where the ball is," Te'o said. "We're going to protect the end zone at all costs."

After Brindza's school record-tying fifth field goal put the Irish up by nine points with 5:58 left, Marqise Lee caught a 53-yard pass from USC freshman Max Wittek at the Notre Dame 2.

But after USC failed on three straight runs at a defense that has allowed just 11 rushing TDs in 30 games, Wittek threw incomplete to fullback Soma Vainuku, setting off a leaping, chest-bumping celebration on the Notre Dame sideline and in the Irish sections of the sold-out Coliseum.

"They've had a great goal-line defense all year," USC coach Lane Kiffin said. "They've done that to everybody down on the goal line. ... It's just so hard to score touchdowns versus them. When the ball is on the 2-inch line, you'd think you could score touchdowns."

The grind-it-out win highlighted an unforgettable season for the Irish, who began the year with questions about their relevancy and survived some uninspiring performances and nail-biting finishes with their unbeaten record intact.

Notre Dame is likely to face an Southeastern Conference opponent in Miami, but won't know for another week which one. Alabama and Georgia play for the SSEC title in Atlanta.

With the Irish offense repeatedly stalling in the red zone against the Trojans, Brindza went five for six on field goals, even hitting a 52-yarder at the halftime gun.

Wittek passed for 186 yards with two interceptions in his first career start for the Trojans, who completed their tumble from the preseason No. 1 ranking with four losses in five games in an enormously disappointing season. Wittek filled in capably for injured Matt Barkley, but USC is headed to a lower-tier bowl in the first year after its NCAA-mandated two-year postseason ban ended.

Lee caught five passes for 75 yards, yet still broke the Pac-12 single-season receptions record established last year by teammate Robert Woods, who had seven catches for 92 yards.

Barkley watched from the sideline in a grey hoodie with a sling on his right arm after spraining his shoulder in last week's loss at UCLA. The senior and Pac-12 career passing leader won twice in South Bend during his career, but never got to face the Irish at the Coliseum, sidelined by injuries for both visits.

Barkley still ran down the Coliseum tunnel with the rest of the USC seniors for their final home game. He participated in the coin toss, but could only watch while the Irish opened the game with three clock-consuming drives resulting in 13 points.

USC's much-criticized defensive caution under assistant head coach Monte Kiffin was exploited by the Irish, with Golson patiently finding the sags in the Trojans' pass coverage for 181 yards passing in the first half. Riddick went 9 yards for a TD in the first quarter, but USC also stiffened to hold Notre Dame to field goals twice in the red zone.

Notre Dame held its 12th straight opponent without a first-quarter touchdown, but Wittek found Woods for a 9-yard score on the first play of the second quarter ? just the ninth touchdown allowed by Notre Dame all season long. The Irish took a 16-10 lead to halftime when Brindza hit the second-longest field goal in Notre Dame history.

Te'o made the seventh interception of his phenomenal season when Wittek threw directly to him on USC's second play of the second half. Both teams struggled to move the ball in the third quarter, and USC settled for a field goal with 9:20 to play just a few moments after Kiffin called a timeout right before a play that ended with Lee appearing to catch a pass on the goal line.
