Report: Sharks extend coach McLellan's contract

Todd McLellan seems like he's been on the NHL coaching hot seat for a solid year or two now.

As of Wednesday, you can reportedly remove his name from that list.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the Sharks have decided to extend McLellan's contract. McLellan has been behind San Jose's bench for five seasons and led the Sharks to a 220-108-48 record, three Pacific Division titles, and twice reached the Western Conference finals.

In 2013 the Sharks went 25-16-7 during the lockout-shortened season and swept the Vancouver Canucks in the first round, only to lose to the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings in seven games in the second round.

While McLellan and the Sharks have been criticized for never getting over the playoff hump and winning the Stanley Cup (or even reaching the Stanley Cup Final) there's no solid reason to make a coaching change. The Sharks are still one of the best and most competitive teams. General manager Doug Wilson has been very patient with his coaching staff and core and seems determined to stay the course with the core that's been assembled in San Jose.
