Police say Pedro Vargas was shot and killed after going on a deadly shooting spree in his Florida apartment complex.
/ CBS Miami(CBS/AP) HIALEAH, Fla. -- Pedro Vargas, the man who police say killed six in a deadly shootout at a Hialeah, Fla. apartment complex, called 911 hours before the July 26 rampage and said he was being followed by someone who was casting spells on him, reports CBS Miami.
Vargas' mother Esperanza Patterson, 83, told operators her son was nervous and suffered from problems, the Herald reports. She reportedly told dispatchers that officers didn't need to respond to the apartment because she had already slipped two Xanax pills into his food.
Police said that later that evening, Vargas set a combustible liquid on fire in his apartment, sending the unit into flames, police said. Vargas shot building manager Italo Pisciotti and his wife went as they running toward the smoke, according to police.
Vargas then went back into his apartment and began firing from his balcony. One of the shots struck and killed 33-year-old Carlos Javier Gavilanes. He then stormed into a third-story apartment, police said, where he shot and killed a family of three: Patricio Simono, 64, Merly Niebles, 51, and her 17-year-old daughter.
Police exchanged gunfire with Vargas for eight hours in the complex, with Vargas taking two hostages in an apartment in the shootout's final hours. The rampage ended when a SWAT team rescued the hostages and shot and killed Vargas.
After he called 911 but before the rampage began,?El Neuvo Herald?reports that Vargas went the Kendall law office of attorney Angel Castillo Jr., who three days earlier had gotten Vargas to apologize for threatening former co-workers.
Vargas worked at a company in Miami as a temporary graphic designer, Castillo told the paper, but admitted to sending malicious emails to the company's employees after he was let go in October. Castillo took Vargas' deposition and asked Vargas to write a letter of apology, which he did, reports the paper.
Castillo wasn't at the office when Vargas arrived, the paper reports.
"We believe that if the lawyer had been in his office that afternoon, Vargas might have killed him," Hialeah Police Chief Sergio Vel?zquez told the paper. "We suspect that case motivated all that violence. That would have been what made him unstable."
Vargas reportedly told his mother he was concerned his legal problems were going to cost him money, but Castillo said in a statement to the Neuvo Herald that the company decided not to pursue further action against Vargas after he apologized for the threatening emails.

Some in the US have long expected that China's massive?telecom company?Huawei?is developing tools for the Chinese government?to commit cyber-espionage?around the world. Now that?Huawei's?getting serious about its?expansion?into?Africa, eyebrows are being raised again.
In 2012, a House committe?labeled?Huawei?a national security threat, and the US government has accused the firm of nefarious surveillance practices many times in the last several years. That includes?accusing it of?helping the Iranian government?monitor its citizens and quash dissent, and having ties to the Taliban. Each time the company has?denied the allegations,?and government investigations consistently?fail to turn up?any hard evidence.?
But now?Huawei?has invested billions of dollars in Africa over?the last two decades, providing?affordable cell phones, internet access,?and telecommunications networks to the continent. Over the last few months?Huawei?has closed major deals in Africa to get more areas?on the grid.?The company?says?it's?bridging the digital divide, but others suspect?it's?wiring the continent for surveillance.
The loudest concerned party is former?NSA?and CIA?head Michael Hayden, who has repeatedly raised warning flags about?Huawei's?suspected espionage. "The Chinese see themselves in a global economic competition with the United States, and they see real advantages of at least having the possibility of exploiting African?networks in the future," he told?Foreign Policy?yesterday.?
At this point,?Huawei?supplies back-end telecommunications equipment?wi-fi?routers, mobile networks, communications hardware?to?a third of the world. The thinking goes that if you build the infrastructure, you can easily build backdoors to get in and ascertain information. And not only is China laying the brick, so to speak. In many cases it's also running the networks for the African governments. If the allegations are true that?Huawei?provides a direct line to Beijing, it's about to have a huge peep hole into Africa.
"Even if there aren't any backdoors, which is a large hypothesis, just the Chinese state having access to the architecture of your system is a tremendous advantage for the Chinese should they want to engage in any electronic surveillance, any electronic eavesdropping," Hayden told FT.
Earlier this month, Hayden again?accused?Huawei?of spying at the Chinese government's behest, saying he had the evidence to back it up, but?the company?fired back, calling the allegations? "tired, unsubstantiated, and defamatory."?
Hmm, government backdoor access to data through communications technology. Where would the?NSA?get an idea like that? It could be tempting to assume that 40 years in the CIA and?NSA?is making Hayden see spies around every corner, but whether or not?Huawei?is involved, the Chinese government has been?named the world leader in cyber-espionage.
Evidence or no, the suspicions are strong enough that?regulators?continue?to block?Huawei?from entering the US market, despite the manufacturer's best efforts to break in.?

If New York City mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner feels like he could use a little PR help following the sexting antics of his alter ego, Carlos Danger, then he's in luck. Kristin Chenoweth has a plan to improve his popularity.
The Broadway star took to the "Tonight Show" stage Tuesday night and delivered a bit of wisdom to Weiner, in the form a parody of her "Wicked" hit, "Popular."
?I?ll teach you zip your fly, you won?t be that guy with a camera down his pants," she sang. "I?ll teach you what tweets to tweet, something clean and sweet. We?ll make sure you?ll get your chance to be popular, the right kind of popular. They?ll think you?ve become a monk, though they?ve seen your junk. Now you?ll play a different show."
From there Chenoweth launched into her social makeover plan, since Weiner has "an awfully long way to go."
"There'll be no more sexy texts, with your biceps flexed," she added. "Your roaming eye will roam no more. You want to be the mayor? Stop acting like a big ol' whore!"
But if Weiner really wants to be the mayor, he's going to have to appeal to voters other than Chenoweth. Before she belted out her message to the man, she assured host Jay Leno that there's no way she could really support him.
While she's fascinated by the politician's drama, she's also "disappointed in that situation."
