Zimbabwe: Civic groups refuse diamond money offer

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? Civic activists say they will not accept the Zimbabwe mining minister's offer of funds because it would hamper their efforts to make government accountable for its diamond revenues.

Farai Maguwu, director of a new minerals watchdog, Center for Natural Resources Governance, said Friday that Mines Minister Obert Mpofu's offer of 1 percent of all diamond sales to civic groups would "compromise our neutrality." He said the non-governmental organizations need their independence to "criticize and pressure" the state to account for its diamond mining activities.

Mpofu earlier said that President Robert Mugabe's government wants to "extend an olive branch" to civic groups that are interested in diamond mining in Marange.

Mpofu has amassed a personal fortune from misuse of the diamond sales, according to a recent report by Partnership Africa Canada.

Bower Osprey likely to stun his rivals in BGRF Owners Bonus Series - Heat 1

Bower Osprey will look to stun his opponents by claiming the BGRF Owners Bonus Series - Heat 1 at Belle Vue in England on Thursday, November 22, 2012. He has been unable to deliver quality results recently, but a drop in class will definitely help him get back into rhythm.

The highly skilful dog has got a lot of talent and it will not be easy for his opponents to prevent him from taking the top spot at the end of the day. He knows how to handle pressure at this level and could prove to be a tough nut to crack.

However, the seasoned greyhound will have to stay focussed from the start until the end in order to cause an upset.

The Grade A2 contest is scheduled to kick off at 21:21 GMT and the spectators at Belle Vue will be desperately awaiting the start of action. They will have to cover an overall distance of 470 metres, which means that both the speed and stamina will be crucial.

There is no doubt that the starting positions will be important, as it will be important for the greyhounds to gain some early momentum. The one who manages to do that will be in a better position to attack towards the end to claim a cash prize of ?76.

According to the bookmakers, the real battle will be amongst Get Home Mikey and Redley Rage, as both of them have been doing a very good job for their respective teams in recent times. They have been rated as the joint favourites to succeed and the punters will definitely risk a lot of bets on them.

However, both the talented hounds will not be in a very good position to attack from the start of the race, which might put them under some pressure.

If this happens, Bower Osprey will definitely take advantage of that in order to finish at the top of the table. He has been slotted in trap number one and that will help him gain an early momentum.

The K. A. Harris? trained dog is at an advantage today and he will be looking to make the most of it at the end of the day.

Tanzania plans first geothermal power plant, renewables

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Tanzania plans to drill its first geothermal power plant next year and expand renewable energy to plug a power deficit that the International Monetary Fund sees as an obstacle to the growth of east Africa's second biggest economy.

Tanzania is racing to introduce a mix of power generation to cut reliance on hydroelectric dams that are vulnerable to erratic rainfall, and also aims to produce power from natural gas following big discoveries offshore.

Stella Mandago, a senior energy officer at African Development Bank (AfDB), told Reuters on the sidelines of a geothermal conference that the bank would, with other development agencies, co-fund $50 million in the form of a grant and loan to Tanzania.

Mandago said $25 million would be used on drilling of steam wells in Mbeya, south of Tanzania, while the rest would be used to develop renewable energy sources including solar and wind.

"The country will receive $50 million which will be disbursed right after the approval in February 2013," she said.

"There is a potential of 650 megawatts (geothermal), but we are going to focus on 200 MW first, in two phases, starting with 100 MW," said Mandago. The total capital requirement for the 200 MW would be $400 million, she added.

The first 100 MW of geothermal power is expected to be available by 2016. Drilling for the second phase is due to start in 2015 and would become available by 2018.

Although drilling down to access energy from the earth is expensive initially, the subsequent supply of cheaper geothermal power would help the country's economic growth. The IMF warned in October that Tanzania needs to limit power outages if it wants to maintain buoyant growth this year and next.

Tanzania produces about 800 MW, hardly meeting its power demand, estimated to grow to 1,583 MW by 2015.

Kenya is the first African country to drill geothermal power, tapping steam energy in the Rift Valley region, to complement hydro and thermal or fuel-based power.

Discovery offers new treatment for epilepsy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? New drugs derived from components of a specific diet used by children with severe, drug-resistant epilepsy could offer a new treatment, according to research published today in the journal Neuropharmacology.

Scientists from Royal Holloway, in collaboration with University College London, have identified specific fatty acids that have potent antiepileptic effects, which could help control seizures in children and adults.

The discovery could lead to the replacement of the ketogenic diet, which is often prescribed for children with severe drug-resistant epilepsy. The high fat, low carbohydrate diet is thought to mimic aspects of starvation by forcing the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Although often effective, the diet has attracted criticism, as side effects can be significant and potentially lead to constipation, hypoglycaemia, retarded growth and bone fractures.

By pinpointing fatty acids in the ketogenic diet that are effective in controlling epilepsy, researchers hope that they can develop a pill for children and adults that could provide similar epilepsy control, but lacks the side effects of the diet.

Professor Robin Williams from the Centre of Biomedical Sciences at Royal Holloway said: ?This is an important breakthrough. The family of medium chain fatty acids that we have identified provide an exciting new field of research with the potential of identifying, stronger, and safer epilepsy treatments.?

The study tested a range of fatty acids found in the ketogenic diet against an established epilepsy treatment. Researchers found that not only did some of the fatty acids outperform the drug in controlling seizures, they also had fewer side effects.

Professor Matthew Walker from the Institute of Neurology, University College London said: ?Epilepsy affects over 50 million people worldwide and approximately a third of these people have epilepsy that is not adequately controlled by our present treatments. This discovery offers a whole new approach to the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsies in children and adults.?

The research also builds on work funded by the NC3Rs in which most of the animal testing normally used in drug development for epilepsy has been replaced by using a simple amoeba to initially screen and identify improved treatments.

Professor Williams added: ?Animals are often used in the search for new epilepsy treatments. Our work provides a new approach, helping us to reduce reliance on animals and provide potential major improvements in human health.?

The specific fatty acids identified in this work are the subject of a patent application, and Royal Holloway is seeking commercial collaborators to pursue the potential for new drug development.

Skin Cancer Forum - Already scheduled for Wide Excision before ...

I had a mole removed last week (suspected deep penetrating blue nevus I've had for 20 years), and because of the unexpected depth, the PA brought in the Dermatologist. They decided to just cover the partial-removal and scheduled me for a wide excision next week. I am obviously still waiting for pathology results, but has anyone had this happen before? I am slightly nervous about the seemingly unorthadox method.
