An eyewitness in Homs told The Associated Press a pro-Assad protest with some 10,000 participants "descended" on the city on Tuesday. "Nobody knows them, they are strangers to the city, they were asking for directions," he said.

Anti-government demonstrators then emerged in Homs neighborhoods, gunfire broke out, and two people were killed and six wounded, he said.

"The security forces arrested the wounded. They stepped on them on the ground and arrested them," said this informant, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, and who said gunfire continued.

Tens of thousands of Syrians took part in boisterous pro-regime demonstrations on Tuesday, shouting, "The people want Bashar Assad!" and releasing black, white and red balloons ? colors of the Syrian flag.

The largest gathering appeared to be in Damascus, but Syrian state TV showed similar demonstrations in the northern cities of Aleppo and Latakia, Hasaka in the northeast, and the southern city of Daraa.

Assad's speech ? and Tuesday's pro-regime display ? showed the president clearly intends to try to ride out the wave of pro-democracy protests, showing the steely determination that has kept the Assad family in power for 40 years.

But the mobilized opposition appeared to be digging in as well, bracing for a showdown in one of the deadliest uprisings of the Arab Spring.

The opposition estimates more than 1,400 Syrians have been killed and 10,000 detained as Assad unleashed his military and security forces to crush the protest movement that erupted in March, inspired by the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt.

The International Committee of the Red Cross announced in Geneva on Tuesday the Syrian government has promised to give it and the Syrian Red Crescent more access to Syrians wounded and detained in the crackdown.

The announcement came after ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger met with Prime Minister Adel Safar and Foreign Minister Walid Muallem in Damascus. Kellenberger had urged Syria to allow the humanitarian organizations to operate unhindered to assess the needs of those affected in the unrest and military operations.

Assad's speech at Damascus University on Monday was only his third public appearance since the uprising began in March. He said a national dialogue would start soon and he was forming a committee to study constitutional amendments, including one that would open the way to forming political parties other than the ruling Baath Party. He acknowledged demands for reform were legitimate, but he rehashed allegations that "saboteurs" were exploiting the movement.

The U.N. refugee agency's spokesman, Adrian Edwards, said Tuesday that 500 to 1,000 people a day have been crossing from northern Syria into Turkey since June 7 and more than 10,000 Syrian refugees are being sheltered by Turkish authorities in four border camps.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said late Monday that Assad's speech was welcome but "not enough."

"He wants to (carry out reforms), but he has to say clearly and with determination: 'Things have changed, we are moving to a multiparty system. Whatever the people's will is, it will happen and I will bring about this transition,'" Gul said.

"As soon as he says this, I believe, he will be able to get ahead of the situation and take things under control. Maybe he is saying these things in between the lines, but he has to say them clearly," the Turkish president said.

Military Abortion Access Bill Hits The Senate [Roe V World]

Irin Carmon ?Women in the military, or who are otherwise covered by military health insurance, have to pay for an abortion out of pocket even if they are raped or the victims of incest. Nor can they use their own money to pay for an abortion on military bases. Yesterday, a bill was introduced in the Senate to change that.

Sponsored by Democratic senators Kristen Gillibrand, Barbara Boxer, Patty Murray, Jeanne Shaheen and Frank Lautenberg, the MARCH for Military Women Act (Military Access to Reproductive Care and Health), basically would mean that women in the military get the same access and privileges as civilian federal employees, Medicaid recipients, and prisoners.

That's despite the fact that military women face a statistically higher probability of sexual assault. As Vania Leveille of the ACLU posed the question to ABC News, "Why are military women treated as second class citizens? Why are they treated differently than the civilian women?"

It'll be an uphill battle. The anti-choice movement has been focused on eradicating federal funding to any institutions that also provide abortions, and while they failed on a federal level, they're making headway in the states. Unsurprisingly, they're not on board with equal access for servicemembers:

"Medical facilities serving our military are meant to preserve live, not destroy it," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List. "Yet this bill would turn military facilities into abortion clinics, using personnel and equipment subsidized by taxpayers. It is time for the abortion industry to stop using the military as a place to advance its agenda."

Last month, an amendment with a similar goal didn't even make it out of a House Committee, which is controlled by Republicans. Rep. Louise Slaughter has introduced the companion bill in the House.

Father's Day a special start to Wade's summer (AP)

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ? Dwyane Wade is getting used to being a father. And a son.

This is a Father's Day weekend like none other for the Miami Heat star. Instead of lamenting over the NBA finals loss to the Dallas Mavericks ? yes, it still hurts, to the point where he's still avoiding television in case replays pop up ? he was spending Saturday flanked by his two sons and their once-estranged grandfather at a jam-packed South Florida water park, enduring long lines because it's what his kids wanted.

Three generations of family, together.

It wasn't long ago when Wade feared he wouldn't have any of them as mainstays in his life. Not anymore.

"It makes me feel whole," Wade said.

This is the Heat star's new normal: 6:45 a.m. alarm clocks in the house because his kids like to rise early, schedules posted everywhere to coordinate where everyone is, reviewing daily logs from the nanny when he's traveling, karate lessons and Spanish classes and carpooling and video games and birthday parties.

He could have spent his days in clubs surrounded by bottles of bubbly; instead, on his kitchen counter these days, there's a bottle of bubbles.

He's never been happier.

The financial aspects of his divorce from Siohvaughn Funches Wade may not be complete until fall, but the marriage is officially dissolved and he now controls custody of his children ? 9-year-old Zaire and 4-year-old Zion. On Father's Day, that's enough to at least soothe the small matter of getting to the NBA finals and seeing someone else hoist the trophy.

"Every day, I'm constantly learning how different they are, which is crazy," Wade said during in an interview with The Associated Press at his gated home. "Zaire, his personality is starting to come out. He's always on the move. He's into girls now. He's always busy. He's into everything. Zion is all about him. Zaire will share. Zion, he knows everything's about him. I learn more every day."

As he's saying this, Wade is sitting in a room with a U-shaped couch that could probably sit 20 people comfortably, with a dark hardwood floor and view of his backyard pool. Among the many pieces of artwork on the walls is a signed photo of himself and Heat teammates LeBron James and Chris Bosh, which isn't far from a painting of Wade in his Marquette uniform.

Yet on the television, in a constant loop? Alvin and The Chipmunks.

"That's Zion," Wade said, just shaking his head and laughing as he reaches for the mute button on the remote.

The kids seem completely comfortable in their surroundings. Zaire answered the door for a visitor on Friday, hand outstretched with a big "How are you?" Zion nodded and waved, then went back to playing immediately, undeterred by the half-dozen or so adults milling about in the family kitchen. The adjustment of moving in with their dad has been relatively seamless.

Dwyane Wade is quick to point out that as a father, he's still learning many things and needs plenty of help ? a nanny, his mother Jolinda, his sister Tragil and others ? to make sure there's no missteps. But his efforts are getting noticed. Wade recently was honored by the National Fatherhood Initiative, for "his dedication to his two sons" given the demands of being a professional athlete and single father.

"He gives dads everywhere a great example," said NFI President Roland C. Warren.

In Wade's mind, one of the most interesting aspects of getting custody of his sons is that parts of their stories are incredibly similar to his own.

There are wild differences, of course: Instead of growing up in rundown apartments and always being broke in Chicago, Wade's sons are getting settled into posh new South Florida digs, with a dad who makes, by some estimates, around $40 million annually.

Take all that away, and the fundamental roots are evident.

"It's crazy when you think about it," Wade said.

About five years ago, Wade was entering the realm of NBA superstardom after Miami won the 2006 title, with him the finals MVP. Around the same time, Wade and his father began mending their fences, after years of strained relations. His father remains largely out of the public eye, though he's been in Miami for much of the past half-decade.

Having his dad around, Wade said, is helping him be a better father for his own boys.

"A lot of things that happened in my life are some of the same steps that he went through," Wade said. "A lot of steps I've taken in my life are like my dad's, and I tried so hard not to be like him growing up."

The one thing Wade has learned since gaining custody: His kids really don't care if the Heat win or lose.

The day after Miami's season ended with the Game 6 loss in the finals to Dallas, Wade was ill and ailing. Everything ached, and he remained hidden from the world and in his bedroom until nearly 6 p.m. Monday, one day after the loss to the Mavericks.

Then he heard the kids downstairs.

"Carrying on like nothing happened," Wade said. "So I got up. I went outside with them. Shot a few baskets. It still hurts. But I had to be out there for them."

His entire offseason is built around the kids' schedules. While he controls custody, part of that court-ordered agreement stipulates that the boys will spend two weeks with their father, then two with their mother, and repeating until school resumes in late summer.

So during the times when Zaire and Zion are in Chicago, their father goes to work.

He leaves Sunday night for Europe, a trip built mainly around his interests in the fashion world. When the kids return in early July, he'll host a basketball camp for kids in Miami for a few days. When the boys go back to Chicago later that month, Wade will depart on a nearly two-week trip to China for countless meetings involving his work with Jordan Brand, Gatorade, Hublot watches and other deals.

"There's a lot to do this summer, me trying to keep building my brand," Wade said. "We're using the time wisely. I'm doing it for them."

Wade pauses for a moment, listening to the chatter from the other room, where his kids are enthralled by a basketball video game ? starring, of course, himself.

"You have a choice to make," Wade said. "You're either going to be in your kids' lives or not. At the end of the day, this is what I wanted. I chose to fight to be in my kids' lives."

Sony teases its Android tablets with a really slow Rube Goldberg machine (Digital Trends)

Rube Goldberg machines are the coolest. There?s just no disputing it. While they?re usually relegated to music videos by bands like OK Go and The Bravery, Sony has decided to use an overly complex chain of a contraption to promote its two new tablets, the S1 and S2. Running Android 3.1 Honeycomb, the two tablets will star in a five episode Rube Goldberg saga called ?Sony Tablet ? Two Will? that should get us excited and teach us?something about these mysterious tablets.

However, if the first episode is any indication, we?re in for a slow and uninformative ride. While fascinating, the video does little more than show the 9.4-inch S1 and smaller clam-shelled S2. Between viewings, we must sit and watch a devastatingly slow train make its way across a room filled with bottles and cogs. We?re also not so sure that Sony?s contraption really counts as a Rube Goldberg machine either, as it would be difficult for marbles to type on a capacitive touch screen and the whole contraption appears to have secondary methods of power.

The Cuban belter and Japanese tribute band stage a Bee Gees-approved quake benefit

12,000 kilometers separate Japan and Cuba. Yet the Bee Gees? influential music has spanned both countries, joining people on both sides in admiration of the British-Australian trio.

However, it was chance that drew Cuban salsa singer Rojitas and Japanese tribute group Spicks & Specks (named after the group?s first number one) together. ?We had just been doing things our own way and not really playing it up,? explains leader Wataru Shimada. ?We are the only Bee Gees tribute band in Japan, which can get quite lonely at times, but Rojitas? manager somehow found us.?

A storied salsa singer who first came to Japan in 2002 for the 100th Anniversary of the Japan-Cuba Friendship, Rojitas was looking for Japanese singers to accompany him on a medley of Bee Gees songs he?d recorded for his new album Habana. As it so happened his tour was scheduled for Yokohama on March 18, exactly one week after the quake.

?I experienced the quake on the 22nd floor of a swinging building in Ikebukuro,? Rojitas says. ?There was so much tension in so many senses; but we shifted the show to a relief concert and went ahead. I just focused on singing with all my heart and power for the 70 people who came even under unstable circumstances and in fear of another earthquake. It was great to see them dancing and smiling away.?

The resultant bond between the Cuban and Japanese was instantaneous, leading them to plan the forthcoming ?Tribute to The Bee Gees 2011? concert. The event will see the Spicks & Specks join Rojitas on chestnuts like ?Massachusetts? and ?You Should Be Dancing.? Brothers Robin and Barry Gibb are offering support in the form of a video message and the sale for charity of autographed CDs and photographs.

Spicks & Specks? Shimada says that his group, which started in high school in the ?70s, was shaped more by the Bee Gees? early ?60s ballad work than their later ?70s disco. ?In 1966 the Beatles played Japan and made a great impact, leading to the Group Sounds fad,? he explains. ?The Bee Gees tended to stay in the shadow of this phenomenon, but I think some of Japan?s best-known groups like The Tigers were more influenced by the Bee Gees than anyone else.

??Melody Fair? from the film Melody probably had the most direct impact. The heartbreakingly beautiful melody, happy-sad and bittersweet, truly resonates with the Japanese mind?it?s almost wabi-sabi,? he continues. ?With ?Saturday Night Fever? they changed drastically and made an even more enormous impact on the general public. Ironically, at this time we kept our distance from the Bee Gees. We did not quite feel up to ?digesting? those songs. The times and the beat were getting the better of us!?

For his part, Rojitas says the Bee Gees gained millions of fans in Cuba as well. ?Their music touches perfection,? he says. ?Barry Gibb is a genius composer, producer and singer; Robin, the lyricist and owner of one of the most incredible voices ever; and Maurice, the master musician, able to play several instruments?the composer and arranger of the whole Bee Gees catalog.?

Rojitas adds that it was natural to turn the project into a charity event. ?It was just in the middle of progress in March,? he says. ?Barry and Robin Gibb announced their encouragement message for Japanese people shortly after the disaster. Also, we found out that one of the members of Spicks & Specks is a victim, too. All this naturally led us to a charity show.?

?Quite frankly, we are excited and uneasy at the same time,? says Spicks & Specks? Shimada. ?The Bee Gees and their achievements should be appreciated even more. We hope we can celebrate their music in our own way and bring it to a Japanese audience and pay a tribute to this fabulous group. We also appreciate their support and concern for what Japan is going through right now.?

Shimada and the Spicks & Specks? manager both live in Chiba, which sustained significant but little reported damage from the tsunami. The former lost his two favorite guitars; the latter lost 11 of his neighbors.

I?ve known Tim Stobbs over at Canadian Dream for quite a number of years. In fact, I really looked up to him (along with?Mike Holman, Kerry Taylor, and a few other Canadian bloggers) when I first started my journey out of debt ? and I still do today.?So, earlier this year when I found out that he had written a book, I knew I had to get my hands on a copy.

Truthfully, I don?t know much about Tim, other than the snippets of his life that he decides to share with his readers on his popular blog. But after reading his book, Free at 45, I really feel like I know him a lot better. First, he is hilarious (or maybe I just have a weird sense of humour). I found myself laughing out loud throughout the entire book. But most importantly? The guy knows his stuff. His writing style made it easy for me to understand what he was saying, and I felt like he was speaking directly to me. Also, he broke down the numbers and really helped me to see the math behind what he was talking about.

As someone who?s #1 personal finance goal is to retire early, I think it was something I needed to read. It put my goals into perspective and helped me understand why I want to retire early, and what I truly value out of life.

Here are the biggest lessons I learned from reading his blog:

• Anyone can retire early. Tim talks about how you don?t need to win the lottery, or flip houses, or get lucky in the stock market, to leave your job and retire early. It?s about knowing what?s important in your life, what makes you happy, and a willingness to work hard and put in the effort.
• When thinking about how much to save for retirement, don?t get caught up in a number. He explains that it?s not what you make, it?s what you spend that determines what you need. Such a logical way of thinking, yet somehow I never really grasped the concept until I read this book. Like he explains, we often times get sucked into thinking we need to replace a certain percentage of our income ? when in reality we might need a lot less than we think we do.

• How to be happy in the present. A huge thing for me was remembering that you can?t wait until you retire to do everything that you?ve wanted to do. Live your dreams today, and be happy with your life. I think that really rings true in my life right now. The past two months have been interesting and stressful, but I can?t recall a time where I?ve been happier.

Tim recently quit his job because he has been unhappy for so long. I think that?s amazing, and a true testament to how he lives his life and what he values.

I don?t do a lot of book reviews, and I certainly don?t endorse anything unless I truly believe in it ? but this is a great book that I think everybody should read ? even if your goal isn?t to retire early.

Earlier today NSSF submitted the following Letter to the Editor?regarding Sunday Hunting in Pennsylvania:

To the Editor:

I was dismayed to see my hometown paper cite a ?growing anti-hunting attitude? as a reason for a decrease in hunting license sales between 1981 ? 2006 (?PA and Sunday Deer Hunting,? June 15, 2011). ?Quite the contrary: the public?s view of hunting has never been higher.? According to a 2006 Responsive Management study, 78 percent of American adults support this great tradition, our great tradition.

Still, as your editorial correctly notes, our country has experienced declining participation in hunting over the past two decades for a variety of reasons ? a growing disconnect between children and nature, loss of habitat and an aging population. As more and more adults hang up their fishing rods, rifles and boots, fewer and fewer young people are picking them up, choosing instead to stay indoors with their video games, television and laptops.? This is bad for our economy, wildlife management and most certainly our children.

Hunting, fishing and other forms of outdoor recreation can provide proven physical, psychological and educational benefits for our nation?s young people ? given the time to participate. If the strong economic incentives, many of which were discussed in your editorial, are not enough to convince some of Sunday hunting?s benefits, perhaps they?ll embrace it as an opportunity to allow these young people to go afield and build the next generation of hunter-conservationists.

Yemen's militants step up attacks amid turmoil (AP)

SANAA, Yemen ? Al-Qaida-linked militants temporarily seized parts of a provincial capital in southern Yemen on Wednesday, the latest in a series of brazen attacks by extremists taking advantage of the turmoil in the poor Arab nation.

The increasingly bold fighters are expanding their reach after wounded President Ali Abdullah Saleh left Yemen for Saudi Arabia and cast the country into deeper chaos. Their gains in a nearly lawless region of southern Yemen lend urgency to U.S. efforts to bolster military capabilities that can be used to strike at the terrorist network.

Yemen is at the southern corner of the Arabian Peninsula close to the Gulf's vast oil fields and strategic shipping lanes in the Arabian and Red seas. It is home to one of the most active al-Qaida branches, which has been linked to several nearly successful attacks on U.S. targets, including the plot to bomb a Detroit-bound airliner in December 2009. The group also put sophisticated bombs into U.S.-addressed parcels that made it onto cargo flights.

Yemen is also home to U.S.-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, whom the United States has put on a kill-or-capture list. Washington accuses him of inspiring attacks on the U.S., including the 2009 shooting at a military base in Texas that killed 13 people.

Saleh left Yemen for treatment of wounds he suffered in a rocket attack on his compound in Yemen's capital, Sanaa. The president, who is nearly 70, was quoted by the Saudi media Wednesday as saying he was "in good health and steadily improving."

Yemen's leader of nearly 33 years, Saleh has held onto power in the face of massive protests demanding his ouster since February. Some of his top aides, military commanders, Cabinet ministers and diplomats have defected to the protesters' side in recent months. This month, troops loyal to him fought rival tribesmen in Sanaa's streets, with both sides using rockets, mortars and artillery.

The turmoil has created a vacuum in Yemen, the Arab world's poorest nation, threatening to cause the country to unravel or break up.

Up to 200 militants from the al-Qaida-linked group Ansar al-Sharia, or supporters of Islamic Sharia laws, launched a surprise dawn attack on Houta, capital of southern Lahj province, killing one soldier and wounding three before taking control of several neighborhoods, according to security officials.

They held them for nearly 12 hours, forcing stores to close and residents to stay home. They pulled out in late afternoon, taking new positions in farmlands just outside the city's southern outskirts.

It was not clear why they withdrew, but some residents said the incursion appeared to be a show of force by the militants, who since late May have seized and held two cities, including a provincial capital, in the neighboring province of Abyan.

The security officials also said bands of militants drove through some neighborhoods in the southern port city of Aden early Wednesday, opening fire on security forces. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The gunfire in Aden prompted a warning by Defense Minister Mohammed Nasser Ahmed of an "imminent danger" to the city by the militants. He also said at a meeting with the city's military and police leaders to rally together to defend the city.

Wednesday's attacks in Houta and Aden underlined Washington's worries that Yemen's ongoing unrest could fuel connections between al-Qaida-linked militants and al-Shabab insurgents in Somalia across the Red Sea in the Horn of Africa.

Witnesses in Houta said some of Wednesday's attackers had Somali features and did not speak Arabic. Lahj is home to a refugee camp housing several thousand Somalis who fled violence in their country.

Houta resident Anees Mansour painted a picture of disarray in Lahj province.

He said the attackers met with little resistance from army and security forces in the city, provincial Gov. Ahmed Al-Maguidi has not been to his office in three days, and that the province's security chief, Mohammed Aqlan, was fired earlier this week.

Daniel Benjamin, the State Department's counterterrorism coordinator, said insurgents in Yemen were operating more in the open and have been able to acquire and hold more territory.

Anticipating worsening conditions in Yemen, the United States is building a secret CIA air base in the Persian Gulf region to target al-Qaida terrorists in case anti-American groups emerge victorious from the country's current political impasse and shut U.S. forces out, The Associated Press has learned.

The AP also learned that the White House has increased the number of CIA officers in Yemen and stepped up the schedule to construct the base, from a two-year timetable to eight months.

The AP has withheld the exact location of the base at the request of U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because portions of the military and CIA missions in Yemen are classified.

The new base suggests a long-term U.S. commitment to fighting al-Qaida in the region, along the lines of the model used in Pakistan, where CIA drones hunt militants with tacit, though not public, Pakistani government approval.

Underlining the growing threat from the militants in Yemen, Ansar al-Sharia, whose fighters have captured the Abyan towns of Zinjibar and Jaar, listed in a statement obtained Wednesday the names and ranks of 12 air force and army officers it said it intended to kill for taking part in attacks last week against its members there.

LONDON ? Actress Elizabeth Hurley and businessman Arun Nayar have divorced after four years of marriage.

The divorce decree was granted at a brief hearing in London Wednesday by District Judge Penny Cushing.

Neither Hurley nor Nayar was in court.

The British actress and Indian businessman married in 2007 at an English castle, with singer Elton John giving the bride away. They followed up the private civil ceremony with a lavish and traditional Hindi wedding in Jodphur, India.

Hurley announced last December that the couple had separated. She has since been romantically linked to Australian cricket star Shane Warne.

Hurley, 46-years old, dated actor Hugh Grant for more than a decade and has a nine-year-old son, Damian, from a relationship with film producer Steve Bing.
