No, it doesnt work like that. Being constipated does not make you any more likely to devolpecolon cancer.

However, Colon cancer can constipation as symptom, but not vice vera.

No one knows what causes cancer, but we do know that many cancers are often associated with chronic inflammation and/or irritation and diseases such as Crohn?s and IBS are risk factors for colon cancer so chronic constipation could increase your risk for it. If you have periodic bouts of constipation I wouldn?t worry too much our bodies are not that fragile.

Colorectal Cancer: Causes and Symptoms

Article by Mac Millon

According to the estimates put forth by the American Cancer Association, there will be almost 141,210 fresh cases of colorectal cancer in 2011. Amongst these, 49,380 people will supposedly die.

Colorectal cancer like most other forms of cancer is a potentially dangerous health condition which can lead to fatalities. The colon is a part of the large intestine which stores body waste. The last section of the colon is called the rectum and it lies right next to the anus. Together they constitute what we call as the large intestine, which is a vital organ of the body. Most often, there might be formation of tumors or polyps which are benign in nature, along the inner surface of the large intestine. These are not potentially life threatening and can be removed easily through colonoscopy. However, if the growths are malignant in nature, it leads to a dangerous health condition by the name of colorectal cancer.

Most often, benign tumors can assume malignant proportions if not treated at the right time. Cancer cells also have the capability of breaking away from the source and spreading the disease to the other parts of the body. This condition is known as the metastasis of this cancer and complete remission from such a condition is virtually impossible.

There are several medications available for treating colorectal cancer if detected in the early stages or for limiting the spread of the disease. However, one of the smartest things to do is to delve deep into the causes of this lethal disease for being able to abstain from it if possible.

Causes of Colorectal Cancer

Some of the most common causes of colorectal cancer would include:

Most often, a diet which is high on fat is considered to be one of the major reasons for colorectal cancer. The byproducts of fat metabolism are known to give rise to cancer causing chemicals or carcinogens. Therefore, cutting on the overall fat intake can possibly keep the disease at bay.Benign polyps which grow from the inner layers of the colon and rectum can become malignant over time. Therefore, if benign polyps are detected, they need to be removed immediately to do away with the possibility of cancerous growth.Chronic ulcerative colitis could lead to colorectal cancer over time. Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation of the inner lining of the colon and rectum which can lead to cancerous growth over a period of eight to ten years. Therefore, such potentially risky conditions should be treated immediately so that they do not amount to such complications. Genetics also play an important role in some cases. First grade relatives undergo an 18% lifetime risk of contracting the disease. Of course, this is something you can hardly do anything about.

These are some of the major controllable and non controllable causes responsible for colorectal cancer.

Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer

Some of the common symptoms this disease is manifested through needs to be studied as well. Some symptoms could be common to ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome as well and diverticulitis. These would include:

Fatigue and weakness could be some of the earliest symptoms of this disease. Another distinct symptom could be passing of narrow stools, constipation and severe spells of diarrhea.Dark bloody stools might also signal the presence of colorectal cancer.Severe abdominal cramps or pains might also occur in this disease.Abdominal bloating is also known to occur in some cases.

These symptoms could be barely suggestive of colorectal cancer. You would need structured medical tests for verification.

Treatments could be surgical and non surgical. Non surgical treatments would amount to chemotherapy medications. However, if the cancer has been detected only in the later stages, complete cure is an impossible dream. The best that can be done is containment.
