Family activities are a great way for you to relax and get creative together as a family. There will be lots going on site during these afternoons with practical art workshops, poetry and installations that all the family can take part in.

MAGIC MAYPOLE

First up is The Magic Maypole on 6 May! Help to create a giant maypole in the Linbury Room with artist Erica Parrett. Decorate the beautiful installation with poems written with the help of poet Jasmine Cooray based on the themes of spring, music and celebration.

THE ANGEL FACTORY

At the end of the month we will be hosting installation artist Davina Drummond and her Angel Factory inspired by Dulwich Picture Gallery?s painting of a Guardian Angel by Italian artist Franceschini. We caught up with Davina who told us a little bit more about the activities that will be happening on the day and what families can expect. You can also read a blog by Davina Drummond about making things, making home and making family in London.

?It will be a chance for every member of your family to become Guardian Angels for the day by making angel wings and carefully choosing someone to be guardian of?.

What will children get to make and what is the idea behind these activities?

?Both children and parents will have the chance to make beautiful angel wings and intricate angel wing feathers. The idea behind the project is to imagine what it would be like to be a guardian angel and more importantly to think about who you would look after and how best you could do that. I?d like people to think about nice things they can do for that person and how best they can protect them. The idea is inspired by the Franceschini painting of the Guardian Angel in the permanent collection at Dulwich Picture Gallery?.

What would you say to encourage those who may not have visited the gallery or a family event here before?

?Dulwich Picture Gallery is one of my favourite galleries in London and is also so brilliant for families; in fact I often bring my own daughter as she loves to run around the beautiful garden. The permanent collection is full of painting treasures, many of which are portraits that young children respond really well to. The Gallery also has a great cafe and is accessible for those with pushchairs as its all one level.? The family days are very well planned, cater for different age groups and are really fun?.

What are you most excited about running this event?

?I am super excited to find out who people will want to guardian and the nice things that they would like to do for that person.?
